Candlemas
The feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, tradtionally known as Candlemas, is celebrated on Sunday 2nd February. On that day we shall be hosting a service of choral evensong at 6:00pm in St Christopher's church.
Candlemas recalls the day on which the holy family presented baby Jesus in the Temple, when he was offered to the Father and shown to his people (Luke 2:41-52). In their old age, the prophets Simeon and Anna recognized him as their Lord, as we shall also sing of his glory that evening. In this choral evensong, we celebrate both the joy of his coming and his searching judgement, looking back to the day of his birth and forward to the coming days of his Easter passion.
The service is being hosted as a civic event for the Mayor of Haslemere, Oliver Leach, in support of his chosen charities.
Following the service, there will be a gathering with refreshments, as a social occasion. Attendance is 'turn up on the night', with no tickets of charges, other than voluntary donation to the Mayor's charities.
