Planning a Funeral

Planning a Funeral

As well as being a time of loss and sadness and the time to commend someone to God's eternal love, a funeral is an opportunity to celebrate their life and to give thanks. We encourage people to hold their services in Church, whenever possible.

At St Bartholomew's and St Christopher's there is room for as many people as would like to come and no restriction on the length of service.  There is plenty of time to include readings, poems, music or contributions from family and friends. We also have facilities for playing recorded music and video.

If there is to be a Cremation, the whole service can be held in Church, if that is what is preferred. The Parish Clergy also conduct services at the Crematorium.  Whoever is taking the service will help you to plan it and can suggest readings and music if that is helpful. Someone from the parish will also keep in touch after the service.

Burial and Scattering of Ashes

Families commonly ask about laying ashes to rest in a family grave, or a special memorial garden in the cemetery or churchyard.  A simple and prayerful service is available by the graveside, and the church can help you make preparations and think about memorial stones.

The Annual Memorial Service

Each year we hold a special Memorial Service for all who are mourning in memory of those they have loved. Invitations go to all who have had family funeral services conducted by the parish in the previous year, but, of course, everyone is welcome.

Memorial Book

A memorial book is available in our churches to commemorate your loved ones. If you have a relative whose funeral was conducted in the parish or at a crematorium by one of ministry team, you can have their name entered in the book. Forms are available from the Churchwardens. There is a very small charge for the inscription.

How can we get started?

The best way forward is to simply call Rector Chris or the Parish Office, who will be able to answer all of your question and to discuss dates. You can find the contact details here.
